Drop off entries at the Village Hall between midday and 3pm.
Prize giving and BBQ from 6pm.

How to enter

 Anyone can enter, with pretty much anything. Grow, bake, make, take. It’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s rewarding AND there are prizes. Don’t miss this opportunity to win big and be the envy of your street, class, household, club or pub…

Just bring your entry along to the Village Hall before 3 o’clock on Saturday 16th September.

Prizes!

 Prizes will be awarded at 6pm followed by a village social BBQ.

There are rosettes, loads of them, for every category, in every section; there are separate prizes for different age groups; AND there are the section cups; AND there are these all-show prizes: 

 
  • Best in Show - overall best entry

  • Wooden Spoon - best effort… without a prize

  • The Johnson Knocker - Oddest (rudest?!) entry.

 

After Show BBQ and Village Social

Once the prizes are announced, please stay for BBQ and village social - all are welcome. Burgers, sausages and proper dairy ice cream (possibly with a flake tin it!). Bring your own bottle, some pennies for food, and chit for the chat.


 

Categories

VEGETABLES - THE COACH & HORSES CUP

Fruiting & flowering - Courgettes, cucumbers, aubergines, artichokes, etc. excluding tomatoes. (4 off)

Tomatoes - Any (4 off)

Root veg - Beetroots, carrots, potatoes, radishes, etc.

Alliums - Onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, etc.

Beans & pulses - French, runners, peas, etc. (6 off)

Leaves - Lettuce, rocket, chard, spinach, etc. (bunch or head).

Brassicas - Cabbage, broccoli, etc. (bunch or head)

Herbs - Mixed or otherwise


FRUIT - THE HADDOW CUP

Tree fruit - Apples, pears, figs, cherries, etc. (4 off)

Soft fruit - Strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, etc.

Other fruit - Rhubarb, exotics, etc.

Hedgerow - Wild, non-cultivated fruit.


FLOWERS - THE CROWN CUP

Roses - All varieties and colours.

Green or wild flower (arrangement)

A flower arrangement (any design).


HOME MADE

Preserved - Dried, cured and/or smoked meat, cheese or fish.

Dairy- Cheese, yoghurt, etc.

Hen or duck eggs (6 off)

Cooked - A homemade pie, pastie, quiche, samosa, sausage, etc.

Confectionary - Fudge, toffee, candy, chocolate, etc.


HOME BREW - THE HIC CUP!

Country wine - Dandelion, elderberry, etc. (bottle)

Home-brew - Any beer, lager, ale, etc. (bottle)

Steeped alcohol - Sloe gin, raspberry vodka, etc. (bottle)

Non alcoholic - Elderflower cordial etc. (bottle)


PRESERVES - THE SUE PEACOCK CUP

Curd - Lemon, orange, lime, etc. (jar)

Jam, jelly or marmalade (jar)

Chutneys and pickles ( jar)

Sauces and condiments - Fudge, tomato, anything! (bottle orjar)

BAKING - THE GRANGEWOOD CUP

Bread (loaf)

Small bakes - Cookies, biscuits, muffins, brownies, etc.

Big cakes - Sponges, Victoria, Madeira, carrot, etc.

Fruity cakes - Gingerbread, Dundee, malted, etc.

ART & CRAFT - THE COMMITTEE CUP

Knitting - Crochet, cross-stitch or tapestry

Handcraft - Wicker, clay, woodwork, pottery, etc.

A painting or drawing - Any style any medium.

A bit of DIY


CHILDREN

Le’go’me! - Bring in your best Lego creations.

Art Attack - Craft something beautiful out of pasta, paper, Hama Beads, Aqua Beads, anything!

Appliance of Science - Chemistry, physics, biology, geology, archaeology, any-ology you can think of.

Poem or prose - Whether a limerick, comic strip, short story or an epic epic; just put pen to paper and let loose your imagination.

Ponsbourne People - Children from the school will have categories set by their teachers, so come along to the prize giving at 6pm.

Youth - listen up! 

Remember, you can enter any section in any category in any part of the show, from flowers to photography - there are special prizes for our younger citizens in each - but make sure your entry is marked ‘kids’ when you drop it off. 

 

Rules

 

The competition is open to anyone living in Little Berkhamsted or Newgate Street (inc. anyone associated with the school). Visitors are also very welcome to view the show, come to the prize giving and to the party. 

All entries must be delivered to the Village Hall between midday and 3 o’clock noon on the day. If you can't make it, entries may be submitted in advance - please contact produceshow@newgatestreet.org for further details. There is a £1 fee per entry, 50p for children. Competitors must enter their own work/produce. No canned or packet mixes are to be used. There will be no access to the hall while judging takes place. Judges are independent and in all matters their decision is final. All entries need to be removed at the end of the show. 

NOTE - Don’t get pipped to the post by peeps with pretty plates - there’re also points for presentation.
